Marrabenta emerged in the suburbs of Maputo in the mid-twentieth century, blending Mozambican rhythms with Portuguese guitar and imported dance music. The festival honours the genre's founders and its living practitioners, with concerts in Maputo and in Marracuene, where the sound has deep roots.
