This is the itinerary most people picture when they think of Mozambique. It pairs the diving and marine life around Tofo with the archipelago scenery of Bazaruto, connected by a single drive or a short flight. Slow, water-focused and best not rushed.

Day 1
Arrive Inhambane
Land at Inhambane, walk the old town and take the dhow crossing to Maxixe and back before transferring to Tofo for the night.

Day 2
Ocean safari at Tofo
A morning ocean safari for manta rays, dolphins and — between October and March — whale sharks. Afternoon free on the beach.

Day 3
Diving or Barra
Divers head for Manta Reef or Giants Castle. Non-divers can drive north to Barra for the lighthouse, the mangroves and a quieter beach.

North to Vilankulo
Travel north to Vilankulo. Arrive for sunset over the bay, and confirm tomorrow's dhow departure time — it is set by the tide, not the clock.

Dhow to Bazaruto
A full day in the archipelago: snorkelling at Two Mile Reef, lunch on a sandbank, and the climb over Bazaruto's dunes for the view across the channel.

Benguerra or a slow day
