Niassa

Mozambique's wildest province: Lake Niassa's freshwater coast and one of Africa's largest protected areas.

Niassa is vast, high and thinly populated. Along its western edge lies Lake Niassa — Lake Malawi — whose Mozambican shore has clear freshwater, rocky coves and hundreds of endemic cichlid species, protected as a reserve. To the east stretches the Niassa Special Reserve, a wilderness of miombo woodland and inselbergs crossed by the Lugenda river, home to elephant, wild dog, sable and lion. Travel here takes time and planning; the reward is space almost nobody else has seen.
