Capital: Matola

Maputo Province

Warm-water diving at Ponta do Ouro, wild dunes, and a national park where elephants walk down to the sea.

South of the capital the coast turns wild. Ponta do Ouro and Ponta Malongane are known for warm-water diving and for dolphins that live along this stretch year round. Inland and north, Maputo National Park protects dune forest, grassland, lakes and a coastline that forms part of a transfrontier conservation area linking Mozambique with South Africa — elephants here move between bush and beach. Macaneta, just across the Incomati river mouth, is the closest true beach escape from Maputo.
