Ponta do Ouro

A sand-track village on the South African border, known for resident dolphins and some of the country's best diving.

Ponta do Ouro is the last village before the South African border, reached down deep sand tracks that keep it small. The bay curves between forested dunes, and the reefs offshore — Doodles, Bass City, Pinnacles — are among the most consistently rewarding in southern Mozambique, with ragged-tooth sharks, potato bass and turtles.

What sets Ponta apart is its dolphins. A resident population of bottlenose dolphins lives along this stretch of coast, and responsible swim-with-dolphin encounters here follow a research-led code of conduct. Humpback whales pass offshore during the southern winter.

The village itself is barefoot and low-key: a market, a handful of bars, a beach where 4x4s park at the tide line.
