Gorongosa — one of Africa's great restoration stories — plus the port city of Beira and the Zambezi delta.
Sofala carries deep history: the old Sofala port traded gold with the Indian Ocean world centuries before Europeans arrived. Today the province is best known for Gorongosa National Park, whose wildlife populations have been rebuilt over two decades in one of the most closely watched conservation projects on the continent. Beira, the second city, is a working port with a striking modernist and Art Deco core. North-east, the Marromeu complex protects part of the Zambezi delta wetlands.
