Beira

Mozambique's second city: a weathered modernist port town with an extraordinary architectural legacy.

Beira grew as the port serving Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, and its centre still shows the confidence of that era — Art Deco apartment blocks, the sweeping curves of the Cine-Teatro, and the vast, half-ruined Grande Hotel, once billed as the most luxurious hotel in Africa and now home to a large community of residents.

The city was badly hit by Cyclone Idai in 2019 and has been rebuilding since. It is not a conventional tourist stop, but for anyone interested in architecture, history and port cities, it is one of the most interesting places in the country.

Macúti beach, marked by the wreck of a grounded ship, runs along the southern edge of town.
