Cahora Bassa
One of Africa's largest reservoirs — an inland sea on the Zambezi, known for tiger fishing.
The Cahora Bassa dam, completed in the mid-1970s, holds back the Zambezi to form a reservoir roughly 250 km long. The scale is hard to convey: from the shore near Songo the water simply runs out to the horizon between dry hills.
The lake is best known to visitors for tiger fishing and for the emptiness — long days on the water with nothing but fish eagles and the occasional fishing boat. The dam wall itself is a major piece of infrastructure and can sometimes be visited by arrangement.
