Each southern winter, humpback whales move north along the Mozambique Channel to calve in warmer water, then return south with their calves. Breaching whales can be seen from shore at several points along the coast, and licensed operators run boat-based whale watching from Ponta do Ouro, Tofo and Vilankulo.
