Capital: Nampula

Nampula

Home to the Island of Mozambique, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the deep blue bay of Nacala.

Nampula is the most populous province in the country and the custodian of its most important heritage site: the Island of Mozambique, capital of Portuguese East Africa for nearly four centuries and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. Stone Town and Makuti Town sit side by side on a coral island barely three kilometres long. On the mainland, granite inselbergs rise abruptly from the plain, and Nacala's deep natural harbour opens onto reefs that divers rate among the best in the region.
