Nampula

Nampula

The capital of the north, surrounded by granite inselbergs and home to the National Ethnography Museum.

Nampula is the largest city in northern Mozambique and the main transport hub for the region. Granite domes rise abruptly out of the plain around it, giving the approach a distinctive look.

The National Ethnography Museum here is one of the country's most important collections, covering Makonde and Makua material culture, initiation rites, masks and musical instruments. For most travellers Nampula is a staging post en route to Ilha or Pemba, but the museum alone justifies a stop.
