Chimanimani
Quartzite peaks, clear rivers and Mozambique's highest ground at Monte Binga, 2,436 m.
The Chimanimani range straddles the Zimbabwean border and holds a landscape that feels nothing like the rest of Mozambique: cool montane grassland, quartzite ridges, waterfalls and rivers running over pale rock. Monte Binga, at 2,436 m, is the country's highest point.
The Mozambican side is protected as the Chimanimani National Reserve, with a buffer zone where communities farm and run guiding services. Trails are unmarked and weather changes quickly, so hiking here is done with local guides — usually as two- or three-day traverses with camping.
The area also holds rock art sites and rich endemic plant life, including several species found nowhere else.
