Bilene
A vast, warm, almost tideless lagoon separated from the ocean by a dune — the calmest water in the south.
Uembje Lagoon at Bilene is around 27 km long and separated from the Indian Ocean by a narrow sandbar that opens and closes with the seasons. The result is a body of warm, shallow, protected water that behaves more like a lake than a sea.
That makes Bilene the easiest beach destination in southern Mozambique for families and for anyone learning to windsurf, kitesurf or paddle. Small boats and kayaks work well; swimming is safe along most of the shore.
It is popular with visitors from Maputo and South Africa on weekends and holidays, and very quiet the rest of the time.
