Cabo Delgado
Pemba
Set on one of the world's largest natural bays, with a reef that starts metres from the beach.
Pemba wraps around a bay so large it is often cited among the biggest natural harbours in the world. Wimbe beach, on the ocean side, is the city's front room: palm trees, beach bars and a coral reef that begins close enough to swim to.
The old quarter of Paquitequete, the Makonde craft market and the baobabs that stand over the town give Pemba a character distinct from anywhere further south. It is also the gateway to the Quirimbas Archipelago.
Parts of Cabo Delgado province have been affected by conflict in recent years. Check your government's current travel advice before planning travel here.
